In Islam, some people are known as ulama. They are scholars and judges.

These people study religious laws and ideas. They help protect and explain what is taught in Islam. Some ulama hold jobs in the government.

Most scholars study in places called madrasas. These are sacred places for learning.

A madrasa might be part of a larger group of buildings. This group could include a mosque or a hospital. Some madrasas use money from gifts to pay teachers. They may even give food and a place to sleep for students.

Students do not just pick a school. Instead, they seek out famous teachers. When a student finishes, the teacher gives them permission to teach.

This permission is like a special diploma called an ijazah.

Ulama study many different things. They study the law and the Quran. They also study math, medicine, and the stars. Some scholars even study philosophy. This helps them think deeply about the world and faith.
