Mu'tazilism is a special school of thought in Islamic history. It focuses on using reason to understand faith and God. This group is known for a type of rationalism. This means they believe human intelligence helps people understand religious principles. They also believe that good and evil are things we can understand through reason. Many people find these ideas interesting because they connect logic with belief.

The group follows several core ideas about how the world works. First, they believe in the oneness of God, which is called Tawhid. Second, they believe in the justice of God, known as Al-'adl. They also hold that humans have free will to choose their actions. This helps them explain why bad things happen in the world. They argue that evil comes from human errors and free will. Because God is just, he does not act against reason.

The history of this group starts with a famous disagreement. A man named Wasil ibn Ata lived in the eighth century. He was studying with a teacher named Hasan al-Basri in Basra. Wasil had a different idea about what happens to a person who sins. He decided to withdraw from the study circle to start his own. His teacher said, "Wasil has withdrawn from us." This is where the name Mu'tazila comes from.

Mu'tazilism had many important moments in different lands. It flourished in cities like Basra and Baghdad. During the Abbasid Caliphate, it reached a high point of power. A period called the Mihna lasted for 18 years from 833 to 851 CE. During this time, the Caliph al-Ma'mun required people to follow Mu'tazila ideas. Scholars who disagreed were sometimes imprisoned or killed. This ended when al-Mutawakkil became leader and reversed the policy.

Many different groups have been linked to these ideas over time. The Aghlabid dynasty used it as a state doctrine in Ifriqiya from 800 to 909 CE. In Córdoba, elite figures during the reign of al-Hakam II followed it too. The Buyids also used these ideas in Iraq and Persia. Today, the influence of Mu'tazilism can still be seen in some places. It can be found in the Maghreb among the Wasiliyah. It also helps shape some modern ways of reading the Quran.
