The Qarmatians were a group of people with strong beliefs. They lived a long time ago in parts of Arabia. They belonged to a branch of Shia Islam. Many followers waited for a special leader called the Mahdi. This leader was expected to bring justice to the world.

A man named Abu Sa'id al-Jannabi led them. He started a new state in a place called Al-Ahsa. This group was very wealthy. Some people thought their way of life was like a perfect society.

The Qarmatians were also known as fighters. They fought against other powerful leaders. In the year 930, they attacked the holy city of Mecca. They took a sacred object called the Black Stone. This act upset many people in the Muslim world.

Over time, the group began to lose its power. One leader was thought to be the Mahdi. But he did not act as expected. This caused the group to weaken. They moved to new places like Pakistan. By the year 1067, the Qarmatian state had ended.
