They claimed to be family to the prophet Muhammad. This claim came through his daughter, Fatima.

A leader named Abu Abdallah helped build the state. He worked with the Kutama Berber people. Together, they won many battles. In 909, Abdallah al-Mahdi Billah became the first Caliph. A Caliph is a leader of a Muslim state.

The empire grew very large. In 969, they took control of Egypt. They built a new capital city called Cairo.

Cairo became a center for art and religion. The leaders were often kind to others. They let Jews and Christians live in peace.

Later, the empire faced hard times. There were fights within the army. Other groups, like the Crusaders, also arrived. These groups took some of their land. In 1171, a leader named Saladin ended their rule. He started a new group called the Ayyubids.
