They lived during the 13th and 14th centuries. These soldiers came from many places in Spain. They lived in the Crown of Aragon and Catalonia. They also came from Valencia, Castile, and Portugal. Most of them were frontiersmen. This means they lived near the borders of different lands. They were known for being very quick and strong. They did not wear heavy metal armor like knights. This helped them move fast through woods and mountains.

Being an Almogavar was a way of life. Many of them started as shepherds or farmers. They lived in the mountains and the countryside. Because of wars, they had to learn to survive in the wild. They could sleep outside and find food on the land. This helped them during short raids or longer wars. They were very good at using the land to hide. They often fought in small groups of five to fifteen men. This helped them use surprise to win. They were very tough and could handle hard jobs.

The name Almogavar has several interesting theories. Some think it means a person who carries news. Others think it means a pilgrim. Another idea is that it means "prideful." The word was first used in the 10th century. It described small groups of Saracens in Al-Andalus. These groups used surprise attacks and looting. Later, Christian soldiers in Spain began using the same name.

King Alfonso X wrote down the rules in the Siete Partidas. The lowest rank was the Almogavar, also called a peon. The next rank was the Almocaden. This was a captain of a small group. The highest rank was the Adalid. An Adalid was a great leader who knew the land. He had to be wise, brave, and very loyal. A special ceremony made a man an Adalid. He would stand on a shield and hold a sword. He would even face the four cardinal points of the earth.

Almogavars were some of the best foot soldiers of their time. Most armies back then loved heavy cavalry and knights. However, the Almogavars used different ways to win. They fought on foot and carried light weapons. They used javelins, short spears, and swords called falchions. They even carried flint to strike sparks before a fight. These sparks and their loud cries scared their enemies.
