A condottiero was a military leader in Italy during the Middle Ages.

These leaders were famous for leading groups of hired soldiers. The name comes from the Italian word condotta. This word means a contract. A condottiero was a contractor who signed a deal with a city.

These leaders were very important to Italian history. They changed how people thought about fighting and power.

In the 1300s, Italian city-states like Venice and Florence were very wealthy. They made money through trade with the Levant. Even though they were rich, their own armies were quite small. When neighbors or foreign powers attacked, these cities hired mercenaries to fight. The contract between the city and the soldiers set the rules. This document decided how the men would serve and what they would earn.

These leaders often used clever plans instead of just being brave. They studied old books about military science to learn new ways to win. Many condottieri preferred to outmaneuver their enemies rather than fighting in big battles. They did not want to risk losing their trained soldiers in a fight. Losing men was bad for their business and their politics. This was a big change from the old way of chivalry. They treated war like a smart science or a professional job.

Many different groups of soldiers arrived in Italy over time. In the 1200s, soldiers from the Crusades brought experience from the Holy Land. Later, men from places like Aragon and Flanders arrived to find work. One famous group was the Great Company, which had about 3,000 men.

Another group was the White Company, led by Sir John Hawkwood. These leaders became so strong that they could tell cities what to do. Some even became powerful politicians in their own right.

Being a condottiero could be a very profitable career. Some leaders earned thousands of florins every month.

This money helped them build wealth and influence. Over time, cities stopped hiring outside groups and started making their own national armies. This shift changed how all of Europe handled war. You can still see a small part of this tradition today. The Swiss Guard at the Vatican is a modern remnant of this history.
