Federico da Montefeltro was a famous leader during the Italian Renaissance.

He was born in 1422 in a place called Castello di Petroia. Federico was a mercenary captain, also known as a condottiero. This means he was a soldier who fought for pay. He was known for being very brave and having great honor. People often called him the "Light of Italy" because of his many talents. He was both a skilled warrior and a very smart thinker.

Federico's life was full of many different jobs and duties.

He began his military career when he was only sixteen years old. He fought for many different powerful leaders to earn money. He used this money to help run his own lands. In 1444, he took control of the city of Urbino. Later, in 1474, he became the official Duke of Urbino. He worked hard to keep his small state stable and fair.

His path to leadership had many difficult moments and changes.

During a tournament, Federico lost his right eye. This was a hard injury for a soldier to have. Surgeons even had to remove part of his nose to help him see better. He also faced many losses in his personal life. His beloved second wife, Battista Sforza, died when she was twenty-five. He also lost his son, Buonconte, in 1458. Despite these sad times, he remained a strong leader.

Federico was famous for more than just fighting in wars.

He loved learning and was a great patron of the arts. He built a massive library in his palace at Urbino. It was one of the largest libraries in all of Italy. He hired many scribes to copy books in his special writing room. He also supported famous artists and writers. He even helped the young painter Raphael start his career. His palace was designed by talented builders like Luciano Laurana.

Many things about Federico's life connect to the world we know.

He was a Knight of the Garter, a special honor from England. He treated his soldiers with great care and respect. He even helped the families of soldiers who were hurt. Federico often walked through the streets of Urbino without any guards. He wanted to talk to his people and see how they lived. He died in September 1482 while in the city of Ferrara.
