He was a condottiero, which is a type of leader who leads a group of soldiers. Colleoni was known for being a great tactician. This means he was very smart at planning how to win battles. He was also a strict disciplinarian. He made sure his soldiers followed the rules and stayed ready. People respected him for how he ran his army.

His career involved moving between many different leaders. He first trained with a master in Piacenza. Later, he worked for leaders like Braccio da Montone and Carmagnola. After Carmagnola died in 1432, Colleoni began working for the Republic of Venice. Venice is a large and powerful land in Italy. He helped Venice win back many towns and districts. Colleoni sometimes changed which side he fought for. In 1441, he joined the leaders of Milan. However, the Duke of Milan did not trust him. Colleoni was sent to prison at Monza for a while. He was finally released after the Duke died in 1447. He worked for the Golden Ambrosian Republic for a short time. Later, he went back to serving Venice. In 1455, Venice gave him a very important job. They made him their captain-general for his whole life.

When he was not at war, Colleoni lived a different life. He lived in the castle of Malpaga, which he bought in 1465. He spent time making his farms much better. He also did charity work to help others. Unlike some other soldiers of that time, he was not a thief. He did not rob the people or the lands he passed through. He was a noble man who cared about his lands and his people.

Colleoni died on November 2, 1475, at his home in Malpaga. He left a lot of money to help Venice during a war with the Turks. He also requested a statue of himself in the Piazza San Marco. A famous artist named Andrea del Verrocchio made the model for it. Later, Alessandro Leopardi cast the statue in bronze. It was not allowed in the main square, so it was placed near a church. Today, the statue stands near the Church of SS Giovanni e Paolo.
