He lived during a time of great change in Europe. Spinola served the Spanish Empire as a top military leader. He was known for being a very clever commander on the battlefield. Many people consider him one of the greatest generals of his time. He helped lead armies during the Eighty Years' War and the Thirty Years' War. His skill made him a very important figure in history.

Spinola had a special way of winning battles. He did not just use brute force to win. Instead, he used rapid movement to surprise his enemies. He was very good at finding an enemy's weakest spot. Once he found it, he would apply force to that exact area. He was also a master of the siege. A siege is when an army surrounds a city to make it surrender.

His family was very old, rich, and powerful in Genoa. He was the eldest son of Filippo Spinola and Polissena Grimaldi. In 1602, he and his brother Federico made a big risk. They signed a contract to raise many soldiers for the Spanish government. Ambrogio used his own money to raise 9,000 men for land service. This was a huge gamble for his family's wealth. He began his career as a general at age thirty-four.

One of his most famous victories was at the city of Breda. This victory happened after a very long siege from 1624 to 1625. Even though the siege was risky, Spinola succeeded. After the city surrendered, he did something very kind. He let the defeated leaders and soldiers leave with their banners and arms. He believed that the bravery of the defeated was the glory of the winner.

Serving in these wars cost Spinola a huge amount of money. He even pledged his entire fortune to help the Spanish government pay for war expenses. Sadly, the government never repaid him, and he lost all his wealth. He died on September 25, 1630, at the Siege of Casale. He was 61 years old after thirty years of fighting. Even though he was no longer rich, he was remembered for his honor.
