Some stories say Hawkwood grew up poor, but that is likely not true. As a young man, he moved to London to learn how to be a tailor. Later, he became a longbowman in the Hundred Years' War in France. He fought in big battles like Crécy in 1346 and Poitiers in 1356. These early years helped him learn how to be a leader.

After fighting in France, Hawkwood became a mercenary leader. A mercenary is a soldier who is paid to fight for different leaders. He joined a large group called the White Company. In 1361, he led this group into Italy.

Because his English name was hard to say, Italians called him Giovanni Acuto. This name means "John Sharp" or "John the Astute." They gave him this name because he was very clever and cunning in war. He was a highly skilled captain who knew how to win.

Hawkwood was a master of planning his battles. He always looked at the land and the weather before fighting. In the Battle of Cascina, he used the terrain to position his army. Even though he lost that battle, it showed his smart thinking. In 1372, he fought at the Battle of Rubiera. He used clever moves to outmaneuver his enemies. He even captured many of their high-ranking officers. These wins made him very famous across Italy.

Being a leader made Hawkwood very wealthy. He was paid in gold coins called florins. His earnings were huge compared to regular workers. A skilled craftsman might earn 30 florins in a year. However, Hawkwood could earn between 6,000 and 80,000 florins every year! He fought for many powerful groups, including the Pope and the city of Florence. He even led a Great Raid on Tuscany to demand his pay. This helped make him even more well-known.

In his later years, Hawkwood lived as a citizen of Florence. He was married to Donnina Visconti, a woman with a very strong character. They had four children together named Janet, Catherine, Anna, and John. Even though he was an old man, he still won great victories. One of his best wins was at the Battle of Castagnaro.
