Many people called him "the Resourceful" or "the Fox." These names show that he was very clever and smart. He was the sixth son of Tancred de Hauteville and Fressenda. Even though he was a younger son, he became very powerful. He eventually ruled many lands in southern Italy and Sicily.

Robert's journey to power began when he moved to Italy. He left Normandy with only a small group of followers. He arrived in southern Italy around the year 1047. At first, he led a group of travelers and fighters. He worked hard to find his own land to rule.

In 1059, Robert made a very important deal with the Pope. He met with Pope Nicholas II at a place called Melfi. Robert promised to be a loyal ally to the Church. In return, the Pope gave him many new titles. He became the Duke of Apulia and Calabria. He was also named the Lord of Sicily.
