He was born around the year 1320 in Derbyshire. His family were landowners, but they were not high-ranking nobles. This made his rise to fame very special. He became a great leader because of his own skill and hard work. He was a very close friend to Edward, the Black Prince.

Chandos was also one of the first members of the Order of the Garter. This was a very important group for knights in England.

Chandos was known as a master of military strategy. This means he was very good at planning how to win battles. He is believed to be the mastermind behind three major English victories. These were the battles of Crécy, Poitiers, and Auray. In 1360, he was made a knight banneret. This allowed him to carry his own banner during a fight. He was also given the title of Viscount of Saint-Sauveur. He held many important jobs, like being the Constable of Aquitaine.

His life changed during the long Hundred Years' War. This was a series of many conflicts between England and France. Chandos worked hard to help the English win territory. He even helped Duke John de Montfort win the Breton War of Succession. This victory helped de Montfort become the Duke of Brittany. Because of his great service, he received many rewards. He became the lieutenant of France and the vice-chamberlain of England. He was a man who knew how to lead people and manage lands.

In 1369, Chandos was working in the province of Poitou. He was trying to stop French forces from taking more land. During a night mission, his group met the French at a bridge in Lussac.

It was a cold night with frost on the ground. Chandos accidentally slipped on the frost during the fight. A squire named James de Saint-Martin struck him with a lance. Chandos was carried to a nearby fortress called Morthemer. He died that night, around the end of 1369 or the start of 1370.

Many people were very sad when they heard he had died. Even the leaders in France felt his loss deeply. Some people believed he was wise enough to create a lasting peace. A stone monument, called a cenotaph, was built to remember him. This monument can still be seen today in a garden in France. His life has even inspired stories in books written long after he lived. He remains a famous figure from the middle ages.
