Federico da Montefeltro was a major figure of the Italian Renaissance.

He was a successful mercenary captain, known as a condottiero. A condottiero was a professional soldier who fought for pay. Federico was also a highly educated humanist and a civic leader. He ruled the city of Urbino for many years. He first took control of the city in 1444. Later, in 1474, he was officially named the Duke of Urbino. His life combined military strength with a deep love for learning.

Federico's early life was marked by questions about his family. He was born in 1422 in Castello di Petroia. His father, Guidantonio da Montefeltro, was the lord of Urbino. Guidantonio acknowledged Federico as his illegitimate son. This means Federico was born to parents who were not married. Two years later, Pope Martin V officially legitimized him. However, many people whispered rumors about his true parentage. Some believed he was actually the grandson of Guidantonio. They thought Guidantonio had passed off his daughter's son as his own heir.

His military career began when he was only sixteen years old.

He served under a leader named Niccolò Piccinino. Federico became a skilled commander through many battles. In 1441, he successfully conquered the castle of St. Leo. He later defended the city of Pesaro against his rival, Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta. Federico was one of the few mercenary leaders who inspired deep loyalty. His soldiers followed him because he treated them with honor. He even provided funds for the daughters of soldiers who were killed.

Federico faced a serious physical challenge during his career. During a tournament, he lost his right eye. This injury was a major setback for a soldier. To fix his vision, he had surgeons perform a difficult operation. They removed the bridge of his nose and his eyelid. This allowed him to see much better and continue leading troops.

Despite this, he remained a powerful force in Italian politics. He fought for the King of Naples and later served the Pope. He eventually captured several territories, including Fano and Senigallia.

As a ruler, Federico focused on culture and stability.

He used the money from his military work to fund great projects. He built a massive library in his Ducal Palace. This library was perhaps the largest in Italy after the Vatican's. He employed a team of scribes in a scriptorium to copy books. He also supported famous artists and writers. He helped the young painter Raphael begin his training. His palace was designed by architects Luciano Laurana and Francesco di Giorgio Martini.

Federico's personal life also saw great tragedy. His second wife, Battista Sforza, was a woman he loved deeply. People described them as "two souls in one body." However, she died at age 25 after giving birth to their seventh child. He also lost his beloved illegitimate son, Buonconte, in 1458. These losses affected his mood, but he continued to lead. He remained a dedicated leader who often walked through Urbino unarmed. He wanted to check on the well-being of his citizens.

Federico's legacy connects to many different parts of history.

He was a Knight of the Garter, a high honor from England. He was even nicknamed "the Light of Italy" for his contributions to culture. His rule brought justice and stability to his small state. He believed that all male residents of Urbino were equal under the law. This was a very important idea for his time. Federico died in September 1482 while in Ferrara. His son, Guidobaldo, eventually inherited the duchy of Urbino.
