He lived during the Edo period. He was famous for combining different types of medical knowledge. He studied traditional Japanese medicine and Chinese herbal medicine. He also learned Western surgery through a method called Rangaku. This term means "Dutch learning" or "Western learning." Because Japan had a policy of isolation, few foreign books could enter the country. This made his ability to learn new things very special. He wanted to help people by performing difficult surgeries safely.

To do this, Hanaoka needed a way to stop pain. He studied an ancient Chinese doctor named Hua Tuo.

Hua Tuo lived around the 2nd century AD. He reportedly used a powder called mafeisan mixed with wine. This powder helped patients fall into a deep sleep. Hanaoka spent many years trying to recreate a similar mix. He started his research around the year 1785. He used many different plant extracts for his experiments. One key plant was the Korean morning glory.

His wife even helped him by volunteering for his tests.

After many years of hard work, he found success. He created a new formula called tsūsensan.

To make it, he ground several plants into a paste. Then he boiled the paste in water to make a drink. The recipe used eight parts of Korean morning glory. It also used other plants like angelica and monkshood. After drinking it, a patient would stop feeling pain. They would then fall into a state called general anesthesia. This means the person is unconscious for a long time. They might stay asleep for 6 to 24 hours.

On October 13, 1804, Hanaoka performed a very famous operation.

He used his drink to help a woman named Kan Aiya. She was 60 years old and had breast cancer. This was a major step for medical history. It is one of the first recorded uses of general anesthesia. Before this, many surgeries were very painful for patients. Hanaoka went on to perform over 150 breast cancer operations. He also treated bladder stones and performed amputations. He even made his own special surgical tools.

Today, we remember Hanaoka for his amazing discoveries. He taught many students his special "Hanaoka method." He wrote many handwritten books to share his knowledge. Even though his work did not change the whole world right away, it was still a huge achievement. The Japan Society of Anesthesiologists uses the Korean morning glory in its logo to honor him. You can even visit his old house in Wakayama. It has exhibits that tell the story of his life. His work shows how much can happen through curiosity and study.
