Hunayn was famous for many different things. He was a scientist, a physician, and a master of many languages. People in the West sometimes called him by his Latin name, Johannitius. He was so good at his work that people called him the "Sheikh of the Translators."

Translating is the way a person turns words from one language into another. In his time, many old Greek books about science and math were hard to find. Very few people in the Middle East could read Greek. Hunayn helped solve this hard job. He mastered four languages: Arabic, Syriac, Greek, and Persian. He used these languages to move knowledge from Greek texts into Arabic and Syriac. This way, many more scholars could study important ideas about the world.

Hunayn worked at a famous place in Baghdad called the House of Wisdom. This was a center where people gathered knowledge from all over. He worked with other translators like Thabit ibn Qurra and Abu 'Uthman al-Dimashqi. To find rare books, Hunayn even traveled to the Byzantine Empire. He once traveled to Damascus to find half of a book by Galen. He translated 129 works by the doctor Galen. He also translated books by Plato and Aristotle.

Hunayn was also a very skilled doctor and surgeon. He wrote 36 of his own books. About 21 of those books were about medicine. One of his most famous books was the "Book of the Ten Treatises of the Eye."

This book was a systematic way to study the eye. He described the parts of the eye in great detail. He wrote about eye diseases and how to treat them. He even discussed how to use surgery to fix cataracts. He believed the crystalline lens was in the center of the eye. This idea was believed by many people for hundreds of years.

His life shows how much one person can help others learn. Because of his work, many old ideas were not lost. He helped build up the Arabic language by translating many different types of writing. His method of translating was so good that later translators followed his way. He even served as a personal doctor to the Caliph al-Mutawakkil. Hunayn stayed true to his doctor's oath to help people. He believed a doctor should never cause harm to a patient.
