A veterinarian is a medical professional who cares for animals. Many people simply call them a vet.

They manage many different health conditions and injuries in non-human animals. Vets do more than just fix boo-boos. They also help with animal breeding and nutrition. They work to prevent diseases through things like vaccinations. They even help protect humans by watching for diseases that jump from animals to people.

How does a vet find out what is wrong? Unlike people, animals cannot talk to explain their pain. Vets must rely on clinical signs to see what is happening. They look at the animal very closely for clues. They might also use special tools to help them. These tools include X-rays, CT scans, or MRI machines. They can also perform blood tests or urinalysis.

Learning about animal medicine has a very long history. Some people believe an ancient Indian sage named Shalihotra was the first. He is a mythological figure from around 2350 BCE. Much later, Claude Bourgelat helped change how vets are trained. He saw that cattle were getting very sick in France. Because of this, he founded the first veterinary college in Lyon in 1761.

Veterinary science has grown a lot over many years. In England, the Odiham Agricultural Society helped the profession grow in 1783. Later, the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons was started in 1844. In the late 1800s, Sir John McFadyean helped start modern research. Today, many vets work in private practices. In the United States, about 75% of veterinarians work in private practice.

There are many different types of veterinarians you might meet. Some focus on small animals like dogs and cats. Others are large animal vets who visit farms to see cows or sheep.

Some experts only work with horses, which is called equine medicine. You might even find an exotic animal vet. They treat animals like reptiles or parrots. There are even vets who work in zoos or with animals in the ocean.
