Myopia is a very common eye condition. It is also called near-sightedness or short-sightedness.

This condition changes how a person sees the world around them. People with myopia can see things that are close very clearly. However, objects that are far away appear blurry to them. This happens because light does not land on the right spot. Instead of hitting the retina, the light focuses in front of it. This is a type of refractive error. It means the eye does not bend light correctly.

There are a few different ways this happens in the eye. One way is called axial myopia. This occurs when the eyeball grows too long from front to back. Another way is called refractive myopia. This happens when the parts that bend light are too strong. For example, the cornea might have too much curvature. The lens inside the eye can also be too strong. Sometimes, the way light moves through the eye changes. This is known as index myopia.

These changes make it hard to see distant objects clearly.

Scientists study many reasons why myopia happens. It is likely caused by both genetics and the environment. You might inherit a risk for myopia from your parents. Studies have found 18 different spots on 15 chromosomes linked to it. These spots are called loci. Some people also believe that spending time indoors increases the risk. Being outside in the sunlight might help protect the eyes. This may be because daylight helps the eyes produce something called retinal dopamine.

Myopia affects a huge number of people across the globe. It is estimated to affect 1.5 billion people. That is about 22% of the entire world population. The rates change a lot depending on where people live. In the United States, about 12% of children have it. In some large cities in China, the rate is 37%. Among adults, the rate is between 15% and 49%. These numbers have been increasing since the 1950s. It is now one of the most common eye disorders.

Luckily, there are many ways to help people see better. Eyeglasses are the simplest and safest way to fix vision. Some people prefer to wear contact lenses. Contact lenses can give a wider field of vision. However, they can also increase the risk of an infection. There are also surgeries like LASIK or PRK. These surgeries permanently change the shape of the cornea. Another option is the implantable collamer lens. This is a lens placed inside the eye in front of the natural lens.
