Visual acuity is a way to measure how clearly you see.

It is not just about seeing things. It is about how well you can recognize tiny details with precision. This ability depends on two main things. First, there are optical factors in the eye. These help make a sharp image on your retina. Second, there are neural factors. These include the health of your retina and the paths to your brain. Your brain also has to interpret what it sees.

Most people talk about distance acuity. This is often called "20/20 vision." It describes how well you see small things from far away.

How your eyes focus light changes how you see.

Sometimes, the eye has a refractive error. This happens when the eye does not bend light correctly. This can be caused by the shape of your eye or cornea. It can also happen if your lens cannot focus light well. If the eye's power is too high, you might have myopia. This is also called being short-sighted. In myopia, the image focuses in front of the retina instead of on it. If the power is too low, you may have hyperopia. This is called being long-sighted. In this case, the focus point is behind the retina.

People have worked to understand vision for a long time.

In 1843, a German doctor named Heinrich Kuechler invented vision tests. He wanted to make sure tests were the same for everyone. Later, in 1854, Eduard Jäger von Jaxtthal made improvements to these charts. In 1862, Herman Snellen published a book about test letters. He called these letters "optotypes." In 1888, Edmund Landolt introduced the broken ring. This ring is now an international standard for testing. These many steps helped doctors create the tests we use today.

There are many specific numbers used to track vision.

A common normal score is 6/6 vision. In the United States, this is called 20/20 vision. This means at 6 metres, you can see details that a normal eye sees at 6 metres. A person with 6/12 vision would need to be twice as close to see the same thing. Some people in Europe use decimals instead. They might say their vision is 1.0. For 6/6 vision, the size of a letter on a chart is a visual angle of 5 arc minutes. This is a very small measurement of how wide the letter looks to your eye.

Your vision is not the same everywhere in your field of view.

Your acuity is highest in a tiny area called the fovea. This is the very center of your vision. Because it is so small, doctors test your central vision. However, your peripheral vision is also very important for daily life. As you look away from the center, your vision gets less sharp. It drops quickly at first and then more slowly. In low light, your eyes use different cells called rods. These rods help you see in the dark, but they do not see fine details as well as the cones in your center.
