Have you ever seen a pencil look bent in a glass of water?

This happens because of refraction. Refraction is when a wave changes direction. This can happen to light, sound, or water waves.

Light travels at different speeds in different things. It moves very fast in a vacuum. It slows down when it moves through air, water, or glass. This happens because light interacts with tiny particles called electrons. The electrons move and create their own waves. These waves mix with the light and slow it down.

When light hits a new material at an angle, it bends. One side of the light wave slows down before the other. This causes the whole wave to pivot.

This bending can make water look shallower than it is. It also makes rainbows. This is called dispersion. Dispersion happens when white light splits into different colors. Each color bends at a slightly different angle.
