People have studied the sky for a very long time.

This science is called spherical astronomy. It helps us find where objects are in space. Scientists use math to find these spots. This field is also called positional astronomy.

One part of this science is astrometry. This is the way we measure where things are in the sky. To do this, we use coordinate systems. These are sets of numbers that show a position. One system is the equatorial system. It is based on Earth's equator. It uses right ascension and declination to name a spot.

We can also use a horizontal system. This uses altitude and azimuth. We find these spots using our local time. Stars are listed in a star catalog. This is a list of positions for a year. But the sky changes slowly over time. Earth's motion causes these small changes.

To find the Sun or planets, we use an ephemeris. This is a table of values. It tells us where objects will be at a certain time.

Modern star charts divide the sky into 88 constellations. These are groups of stars that form shapes. Every star lives in a constellation. These shapes help us navigate.
