These are called contour lines. A contour line joins points that have the same value. On a land map, these lines join places with the same height. This helps you see hills and valleys.

If the lines are very close together, the land is steep. If the lines are far apart, the land is flat.

The gap between each line is called the contour interval.

Scientists use these lines for many things. In weather, they show things like heat or rain. An isotherm is a line for the same temperature.

There are also isobars. These lines show places with the same air pressure. These lines help us predict the weather. People have used different types of these lines for a long time. Some lines show the depth of water in a river or sea. Others show how much the wind might change. These lines make it easy to see big patterns in our world.
