Constant function

math Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Imagine a rule that never changes its mind. In math, we call this a constant function. A function is a rule that takes an input. It then gives back an output.

Most rules change their answer. If you add one, the answer grows. But a constant function stays the same. No matter what number you pick, the answer is always the same value.

For example, one rule might always give the number four. If you pick one, you get four. If you pick ten, you still get four. The answer is steady.

When you draw this rule, it looks like a flat line. The line goes straight across a graph. It does not go up or down. This means the rule has zero slope. Slope is a way to measure how steep a line is.

Because the rule does not change, its rate of change is zero. We call this rate of change a derivative. If a rule has a derivative of zero, it is a constant function. This is a very special and simple kind of math rule.
