Piloting is a way to find your place while moving. It is the way people navigate on water or in the air.

Pilots use fixed points to stay on a good course. These points can be things on land or in the sea. They might use a nautical chart for water or an aeronautical chart for the air. This helps them find a fix. A fix is a way to know exactly where a vessel or aircraft is. It helps them reach a desired location safely.

To find a position, a navigator follows a few steps. First, they look for known reference points. They can use their eyes or even radar to see these points. They might look for mountains, hills, or even cities.

Next, they find the bearing, which is the direction to that object. They use tools like a hand bearing compass to do this. They draw lines from these objects on a chart. Where the lines meet is their current position. If they use three lines, they might see a small triangle called a cocked hat. This triangle shows how accurate their lines are.

People have used many different tools to guide them for a long time. Sailors often use reference manuals called pilots. These books describe shipping channels and coastal profiles. They also talk about weather and currents. The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office makes a series called Sailing Directions. These guides cover areas like the English Channel and the Mediterranean Sea. In the United States, the NOAA Office of Coast Survey makes the United States Coast Pilot. This book covers the Great Lakes and other American waters.

There are many specific facts about how pilots see the world.

On the water, a depth sounder tells a pilot how deep the water is. In the air, an altimeter tells a pilot their altitude. This is their height above the ground. Nautical charts show things like the depth of the seabed and hazards. Aeronautical charts show terrain and geographic features. These charts can be different sizes. Some world charts have a scale of 1:1,000,000, while others are 1:250,000.

New ways to pilot are starting to happen right now. In 2024, Denmark became the first country to test remote pilotage.

This means a qualified pilot can guide a ship without being on the boat. A group called DanPilot is leading this test in the Western Baltic Sea. They use real-time sensor data and radar feeds. This data is sent to a remote center. This new way might make moving ships easier and more efficient. It is a big step for how we move things across the sea.
