To find vertical position, mariners use a depth sounder to measure the water depth below them. Pilots in the air use an altimeter to determine their altitude. From this altitude, they can deduce their distance from the ground. 
Navigators use different tools depending on their environment. On a ship, a navigator might use a pelorus to find bearings relative to the vessel. A hand bearing compass can also provide magnetic bearings. On land, a hand compass helps find bearings to various landmarks. When a navigator sees two geographic features aligned, such as a flagpole and a building, it is called a "transit." A transit is very useful because it is not affected by compass accuracy. This makes it a reliable way to check for errors in a compass.
Finding a position through bearings is a mathematical process. A navigator sights two or more objects of known position and records their bearings. They then plot these bearing lines on a chart. The point where these lines intersect is the current position, or the "fix." Usually, a fix occurs where two or more position lines meet. If a navigator uses three lines, they might see a small triangle called a "cocked hat." This triangle forms if the three lines do not intersect at a single point. The size of this triangle indicates the accuracy of the three separate position lines.
Different types of charts provide the necessary data for these maneuvers. Nautical charts show coastal regions, water depths, and seabed features. They also depict land features, navigational hazards, and human-made structures like bridges or harbors. Aeronautical charts are used under visual meteorological conditions to show terrain and geographic features. These charts vary in scale, ranging from 1:1,000,000 for world charts to 1:250,000. 
Historically, mariners have relied on detailed reference manuals known as "pilots." These books provide descriptions of shipping channels and coastal profiles. They also discuss important factors like weather and currents. The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office produces the "Sailing Directions" series, covering areas like the Mediterranean Sea and the English Channel. In the United States, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) publishes the "United States Coast Pilot." This guide covers the Great Lakes and American coastal and intracoastal waters. 
Modern technology is currently transforming the field through remote pilotage. In 2024, Denmark became the first country to launch a test program for this technology. This initiative is led by the Danish authority DanPilot in cooperation with the provider Danelec. The program is being trialed in the Western Baltic Sea. It uses real-time sensor data, including radar feeds, transmitted from the ship to a remote center. This allows qualified marine pilots to guide ships without being physically onboard. If successful, this could increase efficiency for short transits and difficult boarding conditions.
