How does a lighthouse work so well? It uses a system of lamps and special lenses. The light starts at a lamp, which might use oil or electricity. Then, the light passes through a lens to make it stronger. A famous design is the Fresnel lens, named after Augustin-Jean Fresnel. This lens is thin but can capture a lot of light. It focuses the light into a single, powerful beam. This beam can be seen from very far away. Some lighthouses even use rotating lights to create flashes.

Many clever engineers have improved lighthouse design. John Smeaton rebuilt the Eddystone Lighthouse between 1756 and 1759. He used granite blocks and a special type of concrete. He even shaped the tower like an oak tree to help it stand. Another builder, Robert Stevenson, worked for the Northern Lighthouse Board for fifty years. He helped create rotating lights that changed between red and white. In 1838, Alexander Mitchell began building screw-pile lighthouses. These used piles that were screwed directly into the sandy seabed.

Lighthouses are connected to the technology we use every day. In the past, keepers used whale oil or coal to make light. Now, many lighthouses are automatic and use solar power. They charge batteries during the day to keep the light bright at night. Some use a diesel generator if they need extra power. We also use the Global Positioning System, or GPS, to find our way today. Even with new tools, the steady glow of a lighthouse is a wonderful sight.

The history of lighthouses began long before modern engineering. In antiquity, mariners were guided by simple fires built on hilltops. To improve visibility, people began placing these fires on elevated platforms. This practice eventually led to the development of the lighthouse. In ancient times, these structures often acted as entrance markers to ports rather than warning signals for reefs. The most famous ancient lighthouse was the Pharos of Alexandria in Egypt. It eventually collapsed due to a series of earthquakes between 956 and 1323. Today, the Tower of Hercules in Spain remains intact. It provides important insight into how ancient lighthouses were constructed.

The modern era of lighthouse construction began at the turn of the 18th century. During this time, transatlantic commerce increased significantly. This growth required more lighthouses to be built. Advances in structural engineering and lighting equipment allowed for larger, more powerful towers. These new structures could be placed in locations fully exposed to the open sea. One famous example is the Eddystone Lighthouse. Henry Winstanley built an octagonal wooden version there from 1696 to 1698. Later, the civil engineer John Smeaton rebuilt it between 1756 and 1759. Smeaton modeled his tower after the shape of an oak tree. He used granite blocks and a special concrete called hydraulic lime. This concrete could set even under water. He also used dovetail joints and marble dowels to secure the blocks. This design helped the tower withstand the energy of crashing waves.

Lighting technology has undergone many major transformations. Until 1782, lighthouses generally used wood pyres or burning coal. The invention of the Argand lamp in 1782 revolutionized this process. Created by Aimé Argand, this lamp provided a steady, smokeless flame. It used fuels like whale oil, colza, or olive oil. The fuel was supplied by a gravity feed from a reservoir above the burner. Later, the Souter Lighthouse became the first to use electric illumination in 1871. The South Foreland Lighthouse successfully used electric carbon arc lamps in 1785. Another major advancement was the vaporized oil burner invented by Arthur Kitson in 1901. This system burned vaporized kerosene at high pressure. It produced a light over six times more luminous than traditional oil lights. Swedish engineer Gustaf Dalén also improved the field with his Dalén light. He invented the 'sun valve,' which automatically turned the light off during the day.

Optical systems are just as important as the fuel source. In 1777, William Hutchinson developed the catoptric system. This was a rudimentary optical system that focused light into a concentrated beam. This increased the visibility of the light for distant sailors. However, the most significant breakthrough came from the French physicist Augustin-Jean Fresnel. He developed the multi-part Fresnel lens. This lens design allowed for a large aperture and a short focal length. It was much thinner and lighter than conventional lenses. A Fresnel lens can even take the form of a flat sheet. This design captures more oblique light from the source. It also increased the luminosity of the lamp by a factor of four. This system is still used in many lighthouses today.

Different engineering methods allowed lighthouses to be built in varied environments. Alexander Mitchell designed the first screw-pile lighthouse. These structures were built on piles that were screwed into sandy or muddy seabeds. His Maplin Sands lighthouse began construction in 1838 and first lit in 1841. The Wyre Light in Lancashire was actually the first of this type to be lit, in 1840. Other famous builders include the Stevenson family in Scotland. Robert Stevenson was a major figure who worked for the Northern Lighthouse Board for nearly fifty years. He innovated with reflector designs and Fresnel lenses. He also invented the movable jib and the balance-crane to help with construction. His work helped create lighthouses with individual signatures, allowing sailors to identify specific locations by their light patterns.

Today, the role of the lighthouse keeper is changing. The introduction of electrification and automatic lamp changers made many keepers obsolete. Modern maritime safety relies heavily on the Global Positioning System, or GPS. Most modern lighthouses are now automated. They often use a single stationary flashing light. This light is typically powered by solar-charged batteries. These batteries are mounted on steel skeleton towers. If the power requirement is too high for solar power alone, a diesel generator is used. The generator only runs when the battery needs charging. This saves fuel and reduces the need for frequent maintenance. Even with these high-tech systems, the lighthouse remains a vital part of maritime history.
