He worked at the Soho Foundry in Birmingham, England. Murdoch first used gas to light his own home in 1792. He also used it in his workshop. By 1802, he lit the outside of the Soho Foundry. This public display of gas lighting astonished the local people.

Many people helped develop this technology over the years. Sir James Lowther showed how coal gas could burn in 1733. An inventor named Samuel Clegg later started the Gas Light and Coke Company. In 1804, Friedrich Winzer patented coal-gas lighting. Other cities began using gas for streets very soon after. Paris adopted gas street lighting in 1820. In 1806, the Philips and Lee factory in Salford used it. This was thought to be the first use of gas street lighting in the world.

Gas lighting changed how people lived and worked. Because lights could stay on, factories could work for 24 hours. This helped them produce more goods, especially during long winters. In the United States, David Melville is credited with early gas lighting. He may have lit streets in Newport, Rhode Island, around 1805. Today, we do not use gas for everything. However, some historical districts still use gas lamps.

The mechanism of gas lighting can happen in two distinct ways. The first method produces light directly from the flame itself. This is often done using special gas mixes, such as propane or butane, to increase the brightness of the flame. The second method is indirect. In these systems, the gas acts as a heat source to create light through incandescence, which is the emission of light caused by heat. For example, the gas can heat a gas mantle or lime to make them glow brightly.

There are several types of fuels that have been used throughout history. Before the late 18th century, people relied on liquid fuels like olive oil, beeswax, fish oil, whale oil, sesame oil, or nut oil. Whale oil was particularly common in European cities like London during the early 19th century. As technology progressed, gaseous fuels became the standard. Early gas lights were often ignited manually by workers known as lamplighters. However, many later designs were developed to be self-igniting.

The history of gas discovery is filled with scientific experimentation. Long before modern systems, Chinese records from 1,700 years ago show natural gas being used in homes via bamboo pipes. In the 1700s, scientists began to understand the properties of these gases. In 1726, Stephen Hales reported that distilling 158 grains of Newcastle coal produced 180 cubic inches of gas.

Later, in 1733, Sir James Lowther demonstrated that coal gas could be stored in a bladder and would still burn when pressed through a pipe into a candle flame. This discovery showed the practical principle behind gas lighting.

William Murdoch was a key figure in making gas lighting a practical reality. While working at the Soho Foundry in Birmingham, England, he experimented with coal gas. In 1792, he successfully lit his own house in Redruth, Cornwall. By 1802, he used gas to light the exterior of the Soho Foundry, which astonished the local people.

Murdoch's work was highly influential; he even received Count Rumford's gold medal for his paper on the economical application of coal gas. His efforts helped lay the foundation for commercial gas companies to form.

As the technology matured, it spread rapidly across the globe. Samuel Clegg founded the Gas Light and Coke Company to exploit this potential. In 1804, Friedrich Winzer patented coal-gas lighting, and in 1820, Paris adopted gas street lighting. Some of the earliest street lighting occurred in 1806 at the Philips and Lee factory in Salford, Lancashire. The economic impact of gas lighting was significant, especially for industry. Because gas lights could provide steady illumination, factories could operate for 24 hours a day.
