During the 18th and 19th centuries, spermaceti was used. This was a waxy substance from sperm whales that burned brightly without a bad smell. Eventually, colza oil and rapeseed oil became cheaper substitutes.

In the 19th century, several inventions changed how candles worked and were made. Before 1825, wicks often charred instead of burning, which produced black smoke. This required people to use "snuffers" to trim the wicks regularly.

To solve this, M. Cambacérès introduced a plaited wick soaked in mineral salts. This self-trimming wick curves into the flame to be destroyed by incineration. In 1823, chemists Michel Eugène Chevreul and Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac separated stearin from animal fats. This allowed for the production of harder, brighter candles.

Mass production also transformed the industry. In 1834, Joseph Morgan patented a machine that used a cylinder and a piston. This machine could produce about 1,500 molded candles every hour. This efficiency made candles affordable for the general public. In the mid-1850s, James Young discovered how to distill paraffin wax from coal and oil shales. Paraffin was a bluish-white wax that burned cleanly and had no unpleasant odor. By the late 19th century, companies like Price's Candles became global leaders in production.

Candles have served many purposes beyond simple illumination. During the Song dynasty in China, people used candle clocks to tell time.
