A candle is an ignitable device consisting of a wick embedded in a flammable solid. This solid fuel is often wax, but it can also be tallow or other substances.

While candles primarily provide light, they can also produce heat or fragrance. They can even serve as a method for keeping time. Throughout history, candles were a vital source of indoor illumination. Today, although electric light is more common, candles remain important for functional, symbolic, and aesthetic reasons.

The combustion of a candle is a self-sustaining process. It begins when the wick is lit by an external heat source. This heat melts a small amount of the solid fuel. The melted fuel then vaporizes, turning into a gas. This gas combines with oxygen in the air to create a flame.

The flame continues to melt the top of the solid fuel mass. This liquid fuel moves upward through the wick via capillary action. Capillary action is the process where liquid moves through tiny spaces. This continuous flow of fuel maintains a steady flame. As the fuel is consumed, both the candle and the wick shorten.

Historically, the materials used for candles varied by cost and quality. Early candles were often made from plant materials dipped in animal fat. In Rome, people made true dipped candles using tallow or beeswax.

Beeswax was an expensive material used mainly by the elite and churches. Tallow was a much cheaper alternative, but it was less aesthetically pleasing. In China, early records from the Qin dynasty suggest candles might have been made from whale fat.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, spermaceti was used. This was a waxy substance from sperm whales that burned brightly without a bad smell. Eventually, colza oil and rapeseed oil became cheaper substitutes.

In the 19th century, several inventions changed how candles worked and were made. Before 1825, wicks often charred instead of burning, which produced black smoke. This required people to use "snuffers" to trim the wicks regularly.

To solve this, M. Cambacérès introduced a plaited wick soaked in mineral salts. This self-trimming wick curves into the flame to be destroyed by incineration. In 1823, chemists Michel Eugène Chevreul and Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac separated stearin from animal fats. This allowed for the production of harder, brighter candles.

Mass production also transformed the industry. In 1834, Joseph Morgan patented a machine that used a cylinder and a piston. This machine could produce about 1,500 molded candles every hour.

This efficiency made candles affordable for the general public. In the mid-1850s, James Young discovered how to distill paraffin wax from coal and oil shales. Paraffin was a bluish-white wax that burned cleanly and had no unpleasant odor. By the late 19th century, companies like Price's Candles became global leaders in production.

Candles have served many purposes beyond simple illumination. During the Song dynasty in China, people used candle clocks to tell time.

These candles had hour measurements marked along the wax. In religious settings, candles hold deep symbolic meaning. Christian traditions include the use of Paschal candles and Advent candles.

Even in secular life, candles are used for birthday cakes or candlelight vigils to protest or remember events.

Today, the candle industry is connected to various modern uses. While kerosene lamps and the 1879 incandescent light bulb caused the decline of candles as a primary light source, they found new roles. They are now used to create a soft or romantic ambiance. Scented candles have also become very popular in the 21st century. People use them for relaxation, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdowns. Whether used for a religious ceremony or a simple birthday, the candle remains a versatile tool.
