An inclinometer is a specialized instrument used to measure angles.

These tools measure the slope, elevation, or depression of an object. They do this by comparing the object to the direction of gravity. You might hear people call them by many different names. Some call them tilt sensors, slope gauges, or gradient meters. Others use terms like clinometer, declinometer, or pitch and roll indicators.

Whether they are handheld or built into machines, they help us understand how things lean or tilt.

Different technologies allow inclinometers to work in various ways. One classic method is the Well's clinometer.

This device uses a flat base and a hollow disc. The disc is only half-filled with a heavy liquid. A graduated scale surrounds the glass face of the disc. This scale marks the angle where the liquid surface sits. When the liquid is on the zero line, the base is horizontal. When the liquid reaches the 90-degree mark, the base is perpendicular to the ground. Modern electronic sensors often use an accelerometer to measure tilt. An accelerometer determines the tilt angle by using the Earth's ground plane as a reference.

Some advanced systems use more than one sensor to stay accurate. Accelerometers can be affected by external forces like vibrations or sudden shocks. To fix this, engineers may add a gyroscope to the system. A gyroscope measures rotation rates. An algorithm can then combine the signals from both the accelerometer and the gyroscope. This process helps the device separate the actual tilt angle from errors caused by movement.

Many modern sensors are also two-axis digital inclinometers. These use MEMS tilt sensors to provide simultaneous readings. They can measure both pitch and roll at the same time. This is much faster than using a single-axis tool that requires constant repositioning.

Humans have been finding ways to measure angles for centuries. In ancient times, the astrolabe acted as an inclinometer for celestial navigation. This helped people locate astronomical objects. The Persian polymath Al-Biruni once needed to measure the height of the sun. Because he lacked specific tools, he created a makeshift quadrant. He used a calibrated arc on a counting board and a plumb line. This allowed him to determine his latitude. In the 1870s, the Abney level was developed for surveying. It combined a sighting tube with an inclinometer. Even famous explorers used them. In 1927, Charles Lindbergh used a Rieker P-1057 inclinometer. It provided his climb and descent angles during his nonstop transatlantic flight.

Inclinometers are vital for safety and precision in many industries. In civil engineering, tiltmeters are placed on large structures like dams. These monitor the long-term stability of the earthworks. Geologists use them to monitor volcanoes or the movement of landslides. In forestry, workers use them to measure tree height through triangulation.

Surveyors use them to map geographic features or explore caves. They are also used in mining to measure geologic formations. Even large artillery guns use them to help aim shells over long distances. These tools ensure that massive projects and machines stay in their proper place.

Precision is a major factor in how these tools are used. Highly sensitive electronic sensors can reach a resolution of 0.0001 degrees. However, the true absolute accuracy is often lower. This is because accuracy depends on many combined factors. These include sensor linearity, repeatability, and temperature drifts. Temperature can cause the sensor to drift away from its zero point. Most electronic inclinometers have an accuracy range between ±0.01 and 2 degrees. Engineers must consider factors like vibration, shock, and acceleration when choosing a sensor.

Beyond heavy industry, inclinometers are part of our daily technology. You can find tilt sensors in cameras and automobile security systems. They are even used in video games.

Some handheld game systems use tilt sensors to let players control games by twisting the device. Games like Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble were built specifically around this mechanism. In the automotive world, they help indicate the pitch and roll of vehicles. They are also used in nautical craft to show how a ship lists in the water. From measuring the angle of a solar panel to tracking the movement of a person's pelvis, these tools connect the physics of gravity to our moving world.
