Alidade

An alidade is a specialized sighting device used to establish a line of sight toward a distant object.

This tool allows a user to perform complex tasks by connecting a target to a specific reference point. For example, surveyors use it to triangulate scale maps on site. They do this by drawing intersecting lines on a plane table in the direction of an object. An alidade can also measure horizontal or vertical angles. It can even measure horizontal distance to an object from a specific polar measurement.

The mechanism of an alidade depends on its specific design. Early versions were often simple bars or rods equipped with vanes at each end. A vane, also called a pinnule, acts as a sighting component. Most vanes feature a hole, slot, or indicator to view a distant object. Some designs include a pointer to indicate a position on a graduated scale. In some models, a fine wire is held vertically within a rectangular hole. The user sights the object by lining it up with these wires.

There are several distinct types of alidades used for different scientific purposes. One type is a straight, flat bar with vanes that are offset from the center. This offset allows the sight line to coincide exactly with the edge of the bar. This edge is known as the fiducial edge. Other versions use a slit or a circular hole without a wire. These openings might be as small as 2 mm in width to reduce sighting errors. If the object is dim, such as a star, a larger opening might be necessary.

Another method involves vanes without any openings at all. In this case, the user rotates the device until the two opposite vanes eclipse the object. This process of eclipsing can yield very precise measurements if done with skill. A more complex design was created by the astronomer Johannes Hevelius. His instrument featured a pivot point with a vertical cylinder and a vane. The vane had two narrow slits spaced exactly the same distance apart as the cylinder's diameter.

Hevelius used this unique design to catalog star positions with high accuracy. He chose to use naked-eye observations rather than telescopic sights. To align the tool, the observer moves the vane until the star is just barely visible on both sides of the cylinder. Because stars are so far away, they appear as a single point source. This allows the observer to see the star on both sides of the cylinder simultaneously. This method provided very precise results for his astronomical work.

The history of the alidade reveals its deep roots in global science. The word itself comes from an Arabic term. In Greek, the device was called a dioptra. In Latin, it was referred to as a fiducial line. Some historical alidades, especially those using circular graduations, were also called diopters. These instruments were often highly decorative. Makers showed off their artistic talents alongside their technical skills by using materials like wood, ivory, or brass.

Modern technology has changed how we name and use these tools. Today, the term often describes complete instruments, such as the plane table alidade. In a theodolite, the alidade is the part that rotates around a vertical axis. It bears the horizontal axis for a telescope or visor. In a sextant or octant, the alidade is a turnable arm called an index arm. This arm carries a mirror and an index to a graduated circle.

Alidades also remain vital for environmental monitoring in fire towers. An alidade table is mounted on a leveled circular table. This table is surrounded by an arc calibrated to true north and graduated in degrees. A user can determine the bearing of a forest fire by looking through two vertical sight apertures. They adjust these sights until they align with smoke or a lightning strike. This connection between simple sighting and complex mapping shows the lasting importance of the alidade.
