Viaduct

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A viaduct is a long bridge. It uses many arches or tall pillars called piers. These piers support a road or a train track.

Viaducts connect two high points. They help travel over wide valleys or rivers. They keep traffic moving smoothly. For example, they let trains cross over city streets. This means cars do not have to stop for trains.

Some viaducts have two levels. One level carries cars. The lower level carries a subway. The Prince Edward Viaduct in Canada does this.

People use the space under the arches, too. In big cities, these spaces hold shops or bars. In Paris, some old viaducts are now gardens. People walk in the gardens on top. Artists work in the arches below.

Some viaducts are very big. The Millau Viaduct in France is very tall. One pier reaches 343 meters high. The Danyang–Kunshan Grand Bridge in China is very long.
