A glacis is a man-made slope.

Some glacis were used in ancient times. They helped stop machines from breaking walls.

In the middle ages, castles used these slopes. They are also called taluses. A talus helps keep a wall strong. It stops enemies from digging under walls. It also helps things bounce. If a soldier drops a rock, it hits the slope. The rock then bounces into the enemy.

Later, people used cannons. They made slopes of dirt and stone. These slopes helped soak up cannon shots. They could also make the shots bounce away. This kept the main walls safe.

Today, we use the word for tanks too. The glacis plate is the front part of a tank. This part is very thick and strong. The slope helps the tank. Many shots will bounce off the slanted metal. If a shot does go through, it must travel a longer way. This makes the armor work better.
