A sea stack is a tall pillar of rock. It stands alone in the sea near a coast.

These pillars are made of steep or vertical rock. They form because of wave erosion. Erosion is when wind and water wear things away. This creates a very special shape in the ocean. Many people find these landforms amazing to see. They can even be small islands.

There is a specific way these stacks form. First, the sea attacks weak spots in a cliff. These spots might be small cracks or fault zones. The water uses hydraulic action to hit the rock. This is the force of water crashing against it. These cracks grow larger and turn into caves. If a cave wears through a headland, an arch forms. Eventually, the arch collapses under gravity. This leaves a single pillar of hard rock standing.

Geologists look at the rocks to understand history. Stacks often form in volcanic or sedimentary rocks. Limestone cliffs are a common place to find them. These rocks have a medium hardness. This means they resist wear at a medium rate. Some stacks even have a capstone on top. A capstone is a layer of harder rock. This layer can protect the pillar for a while. The rock layers can show millions of years of history.

Many famous stacks exist in different parts of the world. The Twelve Apostles are in Victoria, Australia. You can also find stacks in Ireland. Dún Briste is in County Mayo, Ireland. There is also Stack Rock in County Antrim. Some stacks are very tall, like Ball's Pyramid. Eventually, the stack will also fall down. It becomes a stump. A stump is a small rock island. High tides might even hide it underwater.

Stacks are useful for many living things. They provide important nesting spots for seabirds. They are also great for people who like sports. Many people go rock climbing on them in Ireland. You can think of a stack like a leftover piece. It is what remains after the rest of the cliff is gone. The sea is always working on the land. It shapes the coast in new ways every day.
