Waterfall

earth science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A waterfall is a place where a river drops.

The water flows over a steep or vertical edge. Many falls form in a special way. A river flows over hard rock first. Then it flows over softer rock. The water wears away the soft rock fast. This makes the drop get higher over time.

This can create a deep hole at the bottom. We call this a plunge pool.

Sometimes, the hard rock at the top breaks. This makes the waterfall move backward. It can even carve a deep canyon in the earth.

Waterfalls are also homes for many living things. They make the air cool and damp. This helps moss and tiny plants grow. Some birds, like the white-throated dipper, nest behind the water. The falling water helps keep them safe from predators.

Some waterfalls do not flow all the time. These are called ephemeral waterfalls. They only flow after heavy rain or melting snow.

You can even find waterfalls under the ocean! This happens when cold water sinks below warm water.
