It is known as the rainiest city in Europe. On average, there are about 200 days of rain every year. This happens because of a thing called orographic lift. This occurs when air is pushed up by the mountains. The mountains also protect the city from cold winds. They block winds from the north, east, and northeast. The Gulf Stream keeps the sea water relatively warm. This helps the winters stay mild compared to other places.

Bergen has a very long and busy history.

Trading likely began in the 1020s. Tradition says King Olav Kyrre founded the city in 1070. He named it Bjørgvin, which means "the green meadow among the mountains." In the 13th century, Bergen served as the capital of Norway.
