Because it is so far north, the sun stays up all night in summer. This is called the midnight sun. In the winter, the weather is subarctic. It is quite cold, but the sea does not freeze. This happens because the warm water from the Norwegian Sea stays nearby.

People have lived in this area for a very long time. Scientists found old buildings and tools from 9,000 to 10,000 years ago.

The Sámi people and the Norse people both lived here. In the Middle Ages, a church was built on the island in 1252. It was called the Church of Saint Mary. At that time, it was the northernmost church in the whole world. This church was built during the reign of King Hákon Hákonarson. The area was once a frontier near the border with Russia.

Tromsø grew much faster in the 1800s. It became a very important place for Arctic hunting.
