Trento has a very long and changing history. The exact start of the city is not certain. Some people think it began as a Rhaetian settlement. Later, the Romans conquered the area in the 1st century BC. They gave it the Latin name Tridentum. This name might mean "Three-tooth place" because of the three hills nearby.

For a long time, it was part of the Austrian Empire. It did not become part of Italy until 1919. During World War I, the area saw many difficult battles.

In the 1500s, the city became famous for a big meeting. This meeting was called the Council of Trent.

It lasted from 1545 to 1563. This event was a major part of the Counter-Reformation. During this time, powerful leaders called prince-bishops ruled the city. They helped make Trento a beautiful place with many new buildings. The city was also a place where Hebrew books were printed. This happened because a special privilege was granted to a printer in 1558.

Nowadays, Trento is a leader in science and learning. It is home to the University of Trento, which started in 1962.
