Bergamo has a very long and interesting history. Long ago, the city was first settled by a tribe called the Orobii. Later, the Celtic tribe of Cenomani conquered the area around 550 BC. By 49 BCE, it had become a Roman municipality. The city saw many changes through the centuries. It was once the seat of an important Lombard duchy. In the 15th century, the Republic of Venice took control of the city. This long period of Venetian rule left many marks on the city. You can still see the Lion of Saint Mark on some buildings today.

There are many amazing things to see and do in Bergamo. In the Upper City, you can visit the Piazza Vecchia. This is a famous square with many historic buildings.

Today, Bergamo is a busy and modern place to live. It is one of the most industrialized areas in Italy. The city is also a popular place for visitors. In fact, it is the second most visited city in Lombardy.
