These two schools host about 40,000 students. This means about 30% of the people in the city are students. Researchers here even won a Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2020. They did this for their work with CRISPR gene editing. The city is a major center for medical and technical research.

Umeå has a very long history in the river valley. People have lived near the river for at least three thousand years. Some old rock carvings from 3,000 BCE are found nearby at Norrforsen. In the past, people grew barley and wheat in the mild climate. They also hunted moose and beaver in the inland areas. The name Umeå likely comes from an Old Norse word meaning "roaring." This refers to the sound of the roaring river.

Many things have changed the look of the city over time. In 1888, a huge fire destroyed much of the eastern town. It left about 2,300 people without homes. To keep the city safe from future fires, people planted 3,000 silver birch trees. Because of these trees, Umeå is called the "City of Birches." The local ice-hockey team, Björklöven, even uses this name. The name means "The Birch Leaves" in Swedish.

Today, Umeå is a busy and active place. It is a great spot for sports and culture. The city hosts Rally Sweden, which is a famous car race in the snow.
