The city is positioned at the mouth of the Ume River. This river flows into the Gulf of Bothnia. Umeå is the largest locality in Norrland. It is also the thirteenth largest city in all of Sweden. The wider municipality had 132,235 inhabitants at the start of 2023.

The geography of the area includes the nearby community of Holmsund. This area serves as the port for Umeå. A ferry line connects Holmsund to Vaasa in Finland. This creates a strong link between the two countries. Many people from Finland live in Umeå. The climate is classified as subarctic. This means it borders a humid continental climate. Summers are short and fairly warm. Winters are long and freezing. However, the winters are often milder than other places at this latitude. This is because of the nearby large body of water.

Umeå has a very deep history in the river valley. People have lived here for at least three thousand years. Some rock carvings at Norrforsen date back to 3,000 BCE. During the Bronze Age, the climate was mild. People grew barley and wheat in the area. They also hunted moose and beaver further inland. The name Umeå likely comes from the Old Norse word Úma. This word means "roaring." It probably refers to the sound of the river. The coast was settled by Germanic peoples who traveled by boat. Permanent Germanic settlements have existed here since at least the 14th century.

The city has faced many changes and challenges. In 1622, King Gustavus Adolphus re-established the town. The town suffered from Russian attacks in 1714 and 1720. During the Russian Pillage, the town was burnt to the ground. Another major event happened on June 25, 1888. A massive fire destroyed the eastern parts of the town. This fire left at least 2,300 of the 3,000 inhabitants homeless. To prevent future fires, the city planted 3,000 silver birch trees. These trees were planted along wide avenues. Because of this, Umeå is often called "Björkarnas Stad," or the "City of Birches." The local ice-hockey team, Björklöven, means "The Birch Leaves."

Education is a massive part of life in Umeå today. The city is a major center for research and learning. It is home to Umeå University and a branch of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. These institutions host around 40,000 enrolled students. This number represents about 30% of the total population. The university was established in 1965. This led to very fast growth for the city. Between 1980 and 2010, the amount of housing doubled. The municipality expects to reach 200,000 inhabitants by the year 2050. However, some studies suggest this might be an overestimation.

Science and research in Umeå have reached global importance. Researchers at Umeå University led work on CRISPR gene editing. CRISPR is a method used for editing genes. This work earned the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The city is also a center for medical research. The university hospital serves the entire northern Sweden region. The university library is also very important. It receives a copy of every new book printed in Sweden. This makes it a vital resource for the north.

Culture and sports make the city very active. Umeå was the European Capital of Culture in 2014. The city hosts many famous music and art events. It is also a hub for television in northern Sweden. Several major newspapers are based there. In sports, the city hosts Rally Sweden. This event moved to Umeå in 2022. It moved because Umeå is a more snow-safe region.
