It serves as the administrative center for both the municipality and the county. The city is situated on the island of Tromsøya. This island sits within the Tromsøysundet strait. It is located just off the mainland of Northern Norway. The city functions as a major cultural hub for the Arctic region.

It is known for hosting several festivals during the summer months.

The geography of the area is defined by water and islands. Tromsøya is connected to the mainland suburb of Tromsdalen. This connection is made via the Tromsø Bridge and the Tromsøysund Tunnel. The island of Kvaløya is another nearby landmass. It is connected to the city center by the Sandnessund Bridge.

The name Tromsø is tied to its location on Tromsøya. The second part of the name means "island." The origin of the first part is still debated by experts. One theory suggests it comes from the Old Norse name Trums. Another theory links it to the word straumr, meaning a strong current.

A different theory involves the island Kvaløya. It suggests Tromsøya was once called "Little Tromsøya." This would be because Kvaløya was once called "Store Tromsøya." This name might refer to the mountain Tromma, which is a sacred mountain for the Sámi people.

Human history in this region spans many thousands of years. Archaeological finds in Tønsvika show habitation from 9,000 to 10,000 years ago.

The area has a rich heritage involving both Norse and Sámi people. In the 12th century, the fjord Malangen served as a border. This border separated Norse and Sámi coastal settlements. Archaeological evidence shows Vikings lived on the main island. They left behind swords, combat tools, and household items.

It was named the Church of Saint Mary in Troms near the Heathens. This title referred to the local Sámi population. At that time, it was the northernmost church in the world. A turf rampart was built to protect the area from raids. The city acted as a frontier near the Russian border. The Novgorod state had rights to tax Sámi people in certain areas. Norway held rights to tax areas further east.

Tromsø grew rapidly during the 18th and 19th centuries. King Christian VII granted the city its charter on June 20, 1794. This happened because the monopoly on cod trade in Bergen ended.

By 1850, Tromsø became the primary center for Arctic hunting. It surpassed Hammerfest in importance during this period. The city developed trade links with Central Europe and Russia. This contact led to the pidgin language known as Russenorsk. People called the city the "Paris of the North" due to its perceived sophistication.

The 20th century brought both exploration and conflict. Famous explorers like Roald Amundsen and Fridtjof Nansen used Tromsø. They recruited crews and used local Arctic knowledge.
