Geographically, it lies northwest of Tartu, Estonia's second largest city. It is also positioned south of Helsinki, Finland. To the west is Stockholm, Sweden, and to the east is Saint Petersburg, Russia. North of the city lies Riga, Latvia.

The physical landscape of Tallinn is defined by its coastal and geological features. The city has a long seaside coast. This coast includes three large peninsulas: Kopli, Paljassaare, and Kakumäe.

Lake Ülemiste is the largest lake in the city. It provides the main source of drinking water for the population. Lake Harku is the second largest lake within the city borders. The only significant river currently in Tallinn is the Pirita river. Historically, the Härjapea river flowed through the town.

However, this river was diverted into an underground sewerage system in the 1930s. The ground beneath the city contains various geological layers. These include Quaternary deposits like sand, gravel, and clay. These deposits are often used as construction materials or as aquifers. A large limestone cliff also runs through the city at locations like Toompea and Lasnamäe.

Tallinn's history stretches back nearly 5,000 years. The earliest evidence includes hunter-fisherman communities. Archaeological finds include comb ceramic pottery from 3000 BCE and corded ware pottery from 2500 BCE. The area saw significant change during the 13th-century Northern Crusades. During this time, Roman Catholic Christianity was forcibly imposed on local populations. In 1219, King Valdemar II of Denmark conquered the area.

Following this, the town became known as Reval in Scandinavian and German languages. The name Tallinn is Estonian. It may derive from "Taani-linna," meaning "Danish-castle." In 1248, the city received Lübeck city rights.

By 1285, Reval became the northernmost member of the Hanseatic League. This was a powerful mercantile and military alliance of German-dominated cities.

The city's strategic location made it a vital trade hub. Between the 14th and 16th centuries, it sat at the crossroads of trade. It connected western Europe with Novgorod and Muscovy in the east. During the medieval period, the city was very well fortified. It featured massive city walls and 66 defense towers.

These walls are considered an outstanding example of German Medieval fortification architecture. In 1530, a weather vane named Old Thomas was placed on the Town Hall spire. This figure became a popular symbol of the city. Over the centuries, different powers controlled the region. This included the Teutonic Order, Sweden, and the Russian Empire.

Tallinn experienced significant hardship during the 20th century. During World War II, the city faced occupation by both Soviet and Nazi forces. The city suffered many aerial bombings. A devastating Soviet bombing raid occurred on 9–10 March 1944.

This single raid caused large-scale fires. It resulted in 757 deaths, including 586 civilians. Additionally, 20,000 people were left without shelter. After the war, the city was re-occupied by the Soviet Union. It was not until 1991 that the independent Estonian nation was restored. Since then, the city has undergone rapid modern development.

Today, Tallinn is a global leader in technology and digital innovation. In 2012, it had the highest number of startup companies per capita among European capitals.
