This metropolitan area is quite unique. It is the world's northernmost metropolitan area with over one million inhabitants. It is also the northernmost capital of an EU member state.

The metropolitan area is a massive urban system. About one million people live in the capital region. Another million people live in the wider metropolitan area.

Helsinki is the third-largest municipality in the Nordic countries. It follows Stockholm and Oslo in size. Its urban area is also the third-largest in the Nordic region. It follows Stockholm and Copenhagen. Helsinki is a bilingual municipality. This means Finnish and Swedish are both official languages. The population includes Finnish speakers and Swedish speakers. Many people also speak other languages. Because of the high number of sea passengers, Helsinki is a major port city. In 2017, it was rated the world's busiest passenger port.

The origins of the name Helsinki are not entirely certain. One theory from the 1630s suggests Swedish colonists arrived at the Vantaa River. They may have called it the 'Helsinge River.' This could have led to the names of the Helsinge village and church. However, dialect research suggests settlers may have come from Uppland instead. Another theory links the name to the Swedish word for 'neck.' This refers to the narrowest part of a river or rapids.

Other Scandinavian towns have similar names, like Helsingør in Denmark. When a town was founded in 1548, it was called Helsingfors. This name refers to the rapids at the mouth of the river. The modern Finnish name Helsinki is derived from this. Official government documents have used the name Helsinki since 1819.

Human history in the area began very early. The first settlers arrived around 5000 BC after the Ice Age.

Permanent settlements appeared during the Iron Age. The Tavastians inhabited the area for fishing and hunting. In the 10th century, agricultural settlements existed according to pollen analysis. During the Middle Ages, the landscape consisted of many small villages. Some of these villages, like Koskela and Töölö, are now districts of Helsinki. The area became part of the Kingdom of Sweden. The 'King's Road' ran through this region. Medieval buildings like the Church of St. Lawrence were built here. Helsinki became a wealthy trading center for furs, wood, tar, and fish.

King Gustav I of Sweden founded Helsinki in 1550. He established it as a trading town called Helsingfors. He wanted it to rival the city of Reval. The king ordered people from other towns to move there. However, the shallow bay made building a harbor difficult. Settlers were eventually allowed to leave the original location. In 1640, the city center moved to the Vironniemi peninsula. This area is known today as the Kruununhaka district.

The city suffered from many fires and diseases. A plague in 1710 killed most of the population. The city also faced destruction during the Great Northern War. Despite these hardships, the population grew to 3,000 by the 19th century.

A major change occurred in 1812. Emperor Alexander I moved the capital from Turku to Helsinki. This was done to reduce Swedish influence. It also brought the capital closer to St. Petersburg. This move helped Helsinki grow into a substantial city. Much of the center was rebuilt in the neoclassical style. The German-born architect C. L. Engel led this rebuilding.

This style makes the city resemble St. Petersburg. The University of Helsinki also moved to the city after 1827. This helped consolidate Helsinki's new role as a national center.

Helsinki is a world leader in urban living. In 2011, Monocle ranked it the most liveable city in the world. In 2016, the Economist Intelligence Unit ranked it ninth out of 140 cities.

In 2014, UNESCO recognized it as a Design City. These achievements show Helsinki's importance on the global stage.
