Because it is so far north, it is the world's northernmost city with more than 1 million residents.

The city's location and layout are shaped by water. Many people call it the "Venice of the North" or the "Russian Venice." This is because the city was built on swamp and water.

This geography created many water corridors and canals throughout the urban area. In the summer, the city experiences a phenomenon called the "White Nights." Because of its proximity to the polar region, the night sky does not get completely dark for about a month.

This makes the city a unique place to visit during the summer months.

The history of the city began with Tsar Peter the Great. He wanted a seaport to trade with Europe. He needed a better port than Arkhangelsk, which was closed to shipping during the winter. On 27 May 1703, he captured the site of a Swedish fortress called Nyenskans. He then founded the city and named it after the apostle Saint Peter.

Building the city was a massive and difficult task. Conscripted peasants and Swedish prisoners of war were used for labor. Sadly, tens of thousands of serfs died during the construction process.

Saint Petersburg has served as a capital for much of Russian history. It was the capital of the Tsardom of Russia and the Russian Empire from 1712 to 1918. Moscow served as the capital for a short time between 1728 and 1730. The city's architecture was shaped by famous designers. Domenico Trezzini worked on a plan for a rectangular grid of canals. Later, Jean-Baptiste Alexandre Le Blond served as the chief architect. These efforts created the Petrine Baroque style.

This style is seen in buildings like the Menshikov Palace.

The city has undergone several major name changes. In the early 19th century, a Slavic variant called Petrograd was used. During World War I, Tsar Nicholas II renamed it Petrograd to remove German influences. After the October Revolution in 1917, the Bolsheviks moved the government to Moscow. In 1924, following the death of Vladimir Lenin, the city was renamed Leningrad.

During World War II, the city endured the siege of Leningrad. This was the most lethal siege in history. In June 1991, a city-wide referendum was held. Voters chose to restore the original name, Saint Petersburg. This change officially took effect on 6 September 1991.

The city is connected to many important legal and scientific systems. It houses the National Library of Russia and the Academy of Sciences. The historic center is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This status protects the unique architecture and monuments of the city. Many residents still use the short nickname "Piter" to refer to their home. Even though Moscow is the current capital, Saint Petersburg is still called the "Northern Capital of Russia." It remains a vital "Window to Europe" for the nation.
