The city centre and northern areas sit along the Byfjorden, often called the "city fjord."

The geography of Bergen is defined by its surrounding mountains.

It is famously known as the "city of seven mountains." While locals debate which specific peaks count, Ulriken, Fløyen, Løvstakken, and Damsgårdsfjellet are always included. Gullfjellet is the highest mountain in the area. The mountains play a vital role in the local climate. They provide a shield against cold winds from the north, northeast, and east. This protection helps maintain a temperate oceanic climate.

It is considered the rainiest city in Europe. On average, the city sees over a millimeter of rain on about 200 days each year. This heavy rainfall is caused by a process called orographic lift. This occurs when moist air is forced upward by the mountains. As the air rises, it cools and releases moisture as rain. Despite the rain, the Gulf Stream keeps the sea relatively warm. This makes Bergen's winters milder than Oslo's, even though both are at 60° North. In summer, however, Bergen is several degrees cooler than Oslo due to these same maritime effects.

The history of Bergen stretches back over a thousand years.

While tradition credits King Olav Kyrre with founding the city in 1070, research shows trading began earlier. A settlement likely existed as early as the 1020s or 1030s. In the 13th century, Bergen served as the capital of Norway. The city's cathedral hosted the first royal coronation in the 1150s. Later, the city became a vital hub for the Hanseatic League.

German merchants established a quarter at Bryggen to trade dried cod, known as stockfish. This trade was so important that the King granted Bergen a monopoly on northern trade. Today, the remains of these old quays at Bryggen are a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Throughout its history, Bergen has faced significant challenges. The city has been hit by numerous devastating fires. The largest occurred in 1702, which destroyed 90% of the town. Other major fires happened in 1248, 1413, 1756, and 1916. The city also dealt with outbreaks of the Black Death and other diseases. In 1940, Bergen was occupied during the German invasion of Norway. During this occupation, a Dutch cargo ship carrying 120 tons of explosives blew up near Bergenhus Fortress. This accident killed at least 150 people and damaged historic buildings.

Modern Bergen is a powerful international centre for several industries.

It is a leader in aquaculture, shipping, and the offshore petroleum industry. The city is also a hub for subsea technology. Bergen Port is the busiest in Norway for both freight and passengers. Every year, over 300 cruise ships arrive at the port. This brings nearly 500,000 passengers to the city annually. This number has doubled in just ten years. Nearly half of these visitors are from Germany or Britain.

The city is also a major centre for education and culture. It hosts the University of Bergen, the Norwegian School of Economics, and the Bergen School of Meteorology.

Local culture is expressed through unique traditions like the buekorps. These are youth organisations that participate in traditional marching. Residents also speak a distinct dialect called Bergensk. For transport, the city uses the Bergen Light Rail and the Bergen Line railway.
