The city sits right on the Emajõgi river. This river is called the "mother river" in Estonian. It connects two of the largest lakes in Estonia, Lake Võrtsjärv and Lake Peipus.

Many people call Tartu the "intellectual capital" of Estonia. This is because it is a center for learning and ideas. The city is home to the University of Tartu. This is the oldest and most famous university in the nation. It was founded way back in 1632.

Besides the university, the city holds important places like the Supreme Court of Estonia. It also has the Ministry of Education and Research. You can find the Estonian National Museum here too. The city is also home to the Vanemuine theatre, which is the oldest Estonian-language theatre.

Tartu has a very long and busy history. People first lived in this area as early as the 5th century AD. By the 7th century, locals built a wooden fort on Toome Hill.

Over time, it grew into a large trading center. In the year 1030, a leader named Yaroslav the Wise invaded the area. He built a fort and named it Yuryev. Many different groups have ruled the city over the centuries. These included the Teutonic knights and the Swedish Empire. The city was even part of the Russian Empire for a long time.

Because so many different people lived there, the city had many names. For a long time, most of the world called it Dorpat.

In German, Swedish, and Polish, people used that name. In Russian, it was sometimes called Yuryev or Derpt. Even the river had different names in other languages, like Mētra in Latvian. Since Estonia became independent in 1918, Tartu has been the only official name. The name might come from an old word for a type of animal called an aurochs. This shows how many cultures have left their mark on the city.

Today, Tartu is a place that celebrates both its past and its culture. In 2024, it was named the European Capital of Culture. This is a big honor for the city. It is also a place where important treaties were signed. For example, the Treaty of Tartu was signed there in 1920. This treaty helped settle things between Estonia and Soviet Russia. The city remains a vital part of Estonian life. It connects old traditions, like the Estonian Song Festivals, with modern learning and science.
