Geirangerfjord

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Geirangerfjord is a beautiful fjord in Norway. It sits in the Sunnmøre region. It is part of a larger body of water called Storfjorden. The fjord is very narrow. Steep mountains rise straight out of the water. These mountains are some of the steepest on the west coast.

You can see many waterfalls here. The Seven Sisters Falls is a famous one. Another fall is called the Suitor. These two falls face each other across the water. There is also the Bridal Veil waterfall. It looks like a thin veil when the sun shines on it.

A small village called Geiranger sits at the end. A river flows into the fjord there. You can take a ferry boat to see the sights. This boat travels between Geiranger and Hellesylt. Many people visit this place. In 2005, it became a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This means it is a very special place for the whole world.

Old farms sit high on the cliffs. Some are hard to reach. You may need to walk on steep paths to find them. These farms include Skageflå, Knivsflå, and Blomberg.
