Vøringsfossen

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Vøringsfossen is a famous waterfall in Norway.

It sits in the Måbødalen valley. This place is in Vestland county. The falls are near a road that joins Oslo and Bergen. The water falls a total of 182 meters. A large part of that drop is 145 meters.

Long ago, people did not know much about it. In 1821, a man named Christopher Hansteen visited. He used a pocket watch to guess the height. He threw stones down the edge. He timed how long they fell. Later, people used a string to find the real height.

A small river called Bjoreio flows into the falls. There is a dam in the valley above. This dam helps make power for people.

Many tourists come to see the site. In the past, they used horses to reach the top. Now, there is a bridge across the deep gap. A helicopter helped carry the parts for the bridge. It is 140 meters long.

The video shows how much water flows in summer.
