Jostedal Glacier

earth science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Jostedal Glacier is a very big field of ice. It is in Norway. It is the largest glacier in Europe.

This ice field is in a park. The Jostedalsbreen National Park began in 1991. The glacier covers over half of the park. It has about 50 arms. These arms are long parts of the ice. They reach down into valleys. Some arms are named Nigardsbreen and Bøyabreen.

High snowfall keeps the glacier big. It is not just the cold that helps. Because of this, the ends of the ice melt fast. One arm is named Briksdalsbreen. In 2012, it lost much ice in a few months. It may break away from the top icefield. Because of this, people do not climb the ice now.

The glacier is in many places. It is in Vestland county. It reaches into Skjåk Municipality too. People even use the water from the ice. They use it to make Vikingfjord. The highest peak nearby is Lodalskåpa.
