A canyon is a deep crack in the land.

Rivers make them over a very long time. The water flows and wears away the rock. This makes big, steep walls.

Sometimes, water gets into cracks in the rocks. The water freezes and turns to ice. This ice pushes the rocks apart. Then, large chunks break off the walls.

Some canyons are very narrow. These are called slot canyons. They often have smooth walls.

Canyons can be in the mountains. They can also be under the sea. Some canyons are even under big ice sheets.
